Halve-It Darts Rules
High-risk scoring game. Hit the target to score, miss completely and your total is halved.
Overview
Halve-It is a scoring game that combines target practice with high-stakes pressure. Each round has a specific target, and players earn points by hitting that target with their 3 darts. The twist: if you fail to score any points in a round, your entire total score is halved. This brutal penalty makes every round tense and can turn the leaderboard upside down in a single turn.
The game tests accuracy across different areas of the dartboard, including specific numbers, doubles, triples, and the Bull. It's an excellent practice format and a thrilling competitive game for groups of any size.

Round Target Types
Each round specifies what you need to hit. Only darts that match the round's target contribute to your score for that round.
Number Targets (e.g., 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15)
You must hit the specified number. Any multiplier counts. Your score for each dart equals the segment value multiplied by the multiplier:
- Single 20 = 20 points
- Double 20 = 40 points
- Triple 20 = 60 points
Darts that land on any other number score 0 for that dart (but don't necessarily trigger the halving penalty — only if all three darts miss the target).
Any Double
You must hit any double on the board (not the Bull). Only the double ring counts — singles and triples on the same number do not score. Your score equals the double's value:
- Double 8 = 16 points
- Double 15 = 30 points
- Double 20 = 40 points
Any Triple
You must hit any triple on the board. Only the triple ring counts — singles and doubles do not score. Your score equals the triple's value:
- Triple 12 = 36 points
- Triple 17 = 51 points
- Triple 20 = 60 points
Bull
You must hit either the single Bull (outer bull) or the double Bull (bullseye):
- Single Bull = 25 points
- Double Bull (bullseye) = 50 points
The Halving Rule
This is the critical rule that defines the game. If you score 0 points in a round — meaning none of your 3 darts hit the target — your entire total score is halved (rounded down).
Example
| Round | Target | Result | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 20 | S20 + T20 + Miss = 80 points | 80 |
| 2 | 19 | S19 + Miss + D19 = 57 points | 137 |
| 3 | 18 | Miss + Miss + Miss = 0 points | 68 (halved from 137) |
| 4 | Any Double | D16 + Miss + D20 = 72 points | 140 |
In round 3, the player missed all three darts on the 18 segment, so the total of 137 was halved to 68 (rounded down). One bad round wiped out nearly all of the progress from rounds 1 and 2. This is what makes Halve-It so exciting and nerve-wracking.
Round Scoring Summary
At the end of each round, your round score (the sum of all scoring darts) is added to your total. If your round score is 0, your total is halved instead of receiving any addition.
- Round score > 0: Total = Total + Round Score
- Round score = 0: Total = Total ÷ 2 (rounded down)
Win Condition
After all rounds are complete, the player with the highest total score wins the leg. If two or more players are tied after the final round, the game continues with sudden death rounds using the same target pattern until the tie is broken.
Starting Player Rotation
In multi-leg matches, the starting player rotates between legs. The first leg starts with the designated starting player, the second leg with the next player, and so on.
Strategy Tips
- Safety first on tough targets: During "Any Double" and "Any Triple" rounds, aim for the largest or most comfortable targets rather than the highest-scoring ones. Hitting Double 8 for 16 points is infinitely better than missing everything and losing half your score.
- Go big on number rounds: When the target is a specific number like 20, aim for the triple. Even if you miss the triple, you'll likely land a single, which avoids the halving penalty.
- The Bull round is dangerous: The Bull is a small target and often the final round. If you've built a big lead, consider playing conservatively. If you're behind, you need to take the risk.
- Don't panic after being halved: Getting halved is devastating, but the game has enough rounds for a comeback. Stay focused and remember that your opponents can be halved too.
- First dart matters most: Landing your first dart on target immediately eliminates the risk of being halved for that round. The remaining 2 darts are pure bonus scoring with no pressure.
- Know your doubles and triples: The "Any Double" and "Any Triple" rounds catch many players off guard. Practice these before playing competitively — your go-to double and triple should be as automatic as hitting 20.
